I was born in Kansas and lived there for forty-five years. I didn’t know how much I loved it, though, until I left. I knew that in this place in order to see its beauty you had to look deep, to look closely, that in its seeming emptiness—the sky itself seems a landmark—there are riches not apparent to the eye accustomed to more flamboyant sights.
